On Oct. 10, 2023, Biology students at A.D. Johnston High School participated in a great learning experience at Powdermill Creek. They were provided the opportunity to learn about Forestry, Entomology, and Watersheds due to the support of local volunteers. Students enjoyed a morning of field experience that allowed them to interact with local experts and wildlife. Biology student Jason Webber said, “This experience has helped me better understand riverbeds and aquatic resources.”
Students caught crawdads, different types of insects, and even caught a fish. These creatures helped to teach the students about the biodiversity in our area watersheds. Biology student Rhiya Paulsen said, “This experience helped me understand ecosystems more by going into detail about the conditions the fish in the creek need to survive.” This project also helped to prove that Powdermill Creek is thriving compared to previous years.
Students also learned about the different types of trees and plants in our area, including how to identify poison ivy. “Leaves of three, let it be” is always a valuable lesson. Biology student Katie Talaska said, “Something I learned at Powdermill Creek is a way to tell the difference between a red maple tree and a sugar maple tree. You can look at the leaves. If the edges are jagged, it's a red maple. If the edges are smooth, it's a sugar maple.”
This is a great learning opportunity that we plan to continue for many years with the support of our community. Bessemer Area Schools and especially the Biology class would like to thank the volunteers that made this learning experience possible.
